Lifting Covid restrictions is no fast fix for tourism

The removal of Covid-19 restrictions is welcome news for the tourism sector, although some in the industry wonder why it took so long. The Tourism Export Council estimates up to 30 per cent of potential bookings have been lost in the last year because New Zealand operators have been disadvantaged compared to countries such as Australia. Initial FIFA estimates put international visitor numbers for the month-long event at around 30,000 but if that holds up, little of it was being seen by inbound tour operators. The New Zealand and Australia co-hosted tournament kicks off in Auckland and Sydney tonight.

Rebounding New Zealand tourism is a rare bright spot for its economy

New Zealand’s international tourist sector disappeared overnight when the country became one of the first to seal its borders at the beginning of the COVID outbreak in early 2020.
But since borders fully reopened in August, foreign tourists have been making their way back and are responsible for one of the main bright spots for an economy battling headwinds as a possible recession looms.

Why New Zealand could lose thousands of tourists to Australia

New Zealand’s Covid restrictions could turn away thousands of international tourists this summer, says one tourism expert. The Tourism Export Council said around 20 per cent of US travellers planning a visit are reconsidering thanks to restrictions.
