Explore Group purchases Fullers GreatSights Bay of Islands

Plans to develop experiences to meet current local and future international demand
Leading tourism operator Explore Group has purchased Fullers GreatSights operation in the Bay of Islands as the first part of a wider expansion plan for the business including growth in Auckland and Australia.

Explore will take over Fullers GreatSights Bay of Islands on July 31 which includes their signature tour experiences such as the iconic Cream Trip that takes in The Hole In the Rock and Urupukapuka Island.

Explore Group Managing Director William Goodfellow says the acquisition will provide the company with the scale to develop its Bay of Islands’ tourism offering and deliver a truly world class visitor experience.

“The Bay of Island’s is already one of New Zealand’s most popular tourism and travel locations, but we want to make the area an even better destination by showcasing its spectacular scenery, wildlife, culture and history.”
Goodfellow says Explore’s cruise experiences in the Bay of Islands throughout its peak summer season this year were busier than expected, and it continues to run weekend and long holiday weekend services throughout winter.

“With locals exploring their own backyard more than ever before, there is a renewed love for New Zealand coming through. Overseas visitors from Australia and further afield are showing a huge willingness to travel when border restrictions ease further and New Zealand is going to be an even more in-demand destination.”

Explore has played a significant part in Bay of Islands’ tourism for 18 years, operating a range of tours including their Discover the Bay Hole in the Rock Cruise, dolphin viewing cruises and ferry services to Otehei Bay on Urupukapuka Island.

Fullers GreatSights will continue to operate under the Fullers GreatSights brand. However, administration of the operation will be centralised as part of the Explore Group.

After a 2020 hiatus due to the pandemic, a revised awards programme will see three individual high performers and up to eight businesses crowned as the very best in the industry.
Winners will be announced at a special awards dinner on 1 September in Hamilton following Tourism Summit Aotearoa, keeping attendees’ costs down by combining these two unmissable events on the tourism calendar. Both events are organised by Tourism Industry Aotearoa.
TIA Chief Executive Chris Roberts says the decision to hold the awards in 2021 came from the tourism operators themselves.
“While a full awards ceremony didn’t feel appropriate this time last year, our members have told us a return to the annual celebration in some form would be welcome. We’ve combined some of the previous categories, further simplified the entry process and won’t be selecting a Supreme Award winner this year.
“We know tourism businesses and individuals are keen to show how they’ve adapted and innovated over the past year, with the awards dinner bringing a sense of prestige and celebration back to the industry.”
Mr Roberts says TIA is excited to bring Tourism Summit Aotearoa and the New Zealand Tourism Awards to Hamilton. “It’s a fantastic opportunity to experience the Mighty Waikato as we unpack the strategic direction of the industry during the day and celebrate tourism’s champions in the evening.”
The three awards for individuals are open to outstanding performers in the industry, and eight awards will recognise business excellence, industry alignment and organisations that are living the values of the Tourism Sustainability Commitment. New Zealand tour operator Leisure Time Travel has launched their latest travel brochure featuring the largest touring programme in the company’s 30+ year history.

The new brochure covers the travel period 1 October 2021 to 30 September 2022 and features a wide range of tours specifically designed for New Zealand travellers with something to suit all tastes; from enlightening short breaks to a wide range of special interest tours throughout both the North and South Islands. Leisure Time Travel also introduce some overseas escorted group tours in the new brochure – the ideal way for senior travellers to restart their international travels when the time comes.
Managing Director Scott Mehrtens said the company had designed the touring programme to allow New Zealanders to explore many regions in depth with some off the beaten path destinations, or enjoy truly diverse holiday experiences like railways tours or small boat experiences.

“It’s been hard work over the past year but very rewarding to see the level of interest in our expanded touring programme. We have maintained our strong core of popular touring itineraries and encouraged our team to put lots of new ideas on the whiteboard and then eagerly set about designing some amazing new tours.”

During the COVID19 lockdown in Autumn 2020 the company worked hard to ramp up their existing New Zealand group tour schedule, putting together some enhanced offerings for the domestic market and launching an annual brochure to the market in Spring 2020. Over the last year the company’s tours were marketed via seniors/travel expos, print and digital marketing, and also through many travel agents who were keen to become authorised sellers of Leisure Time Travel’s tours. Subsequent COVID lockdowns did cause a few headaches and hiccups but the majority of the scheduled tours were able to run – indeed over 100 group and private group tours were run by Leisure Time over the last year.

Offering the domestic touring programme to the New Zealand public to purchase throughout the travel trade has helped support as much of New Zealand’s suffering tourism industry as possible – from key suppliers of accommodation and activities, through to retail travel agents.

“The travel, tourism and hospitality industries have all done it tough since March 2020 so we have to look after each other to get through to a time when borders open fully with quarantine-free travel once again,” said Mehrtens. “It’s been very encouraging to see more New Zealand travel agents coming onboard to sell our tours, and we look forward to also being able to work with them more in the future – even when the borders reopen! Many agents are telling us they will never stop promoting and selling New Zealand now.”
With over 90 scheduled departures covering both the North and South Islands, the largest section in the brochure is that featuring a wide variety of Special Interest Tours. Options include gardens, walking, car or rail themed tours – through to nature, wine, food, historic homes and tours featuring special events such as Napier’s Art Deco Festival, Warbirds over Wanaka, Hokitika Wild Food Festival, Americarna Auto Festival and much more.
